My New Toy!
Towards the end January I bought myself a DJI OSMO, incase you don’t know, the DJI Osmo is a handheld camera that offers all the freedom and fluidity of a Steadicam without the hefty harness. Amazing right?
Not only is this device small enough to fit into my handbag it also shoots in 4K and 120 fps in HD. It is the exact same camera and gimbal that the DJI Inspire 1 drone has.
The next couple of days I went out for a few test runs.

Finally I got booked on a shoot that my DJI Osmo would be perfect for. I had the honour of shooting a BTS video for an Emirati couture designer at the Palazzo Versace Dubai. I also shot with the C100 and various lenses. The shoot was 8hrs long and consisted of roughly 17 different looks. I had a great day working with a great team. Pros and Cons
The Osmo has a 3-axis stabilized gimbal that really does create a smooth Steadicam quality. The gimbal not only allows steady video, but also has modes for shooting stills, timelapses and automated panoramas. If used indoors, I found the Osmo is quite noisy and is not very sharp , don’t bother bumping up the ISO or the footage will become completely un-useable (trust me).
There is no screen display on the Osmo, the joystick has a phone mount for your smartphone where you control the cameras setting using the DJI app connected to the cameras inbuilt wifi. The biggest limitation I experienced was the battery life. It only lasts about an hour (if you’re lucky) so you need to stock up quite a few batteries if you’re planning to use it all day.
Regardless, the Osmo is a great bit of kit to have. I’m looking forward to going on more shoots with it and I will update you on my experience.
